Did you know that as of 6th April 2015, the CDM (Constriction Design and Management) regulations will change the way that health and safety is dealt with from the pre-construction phase right through to the completion of the project.

construction co-workers discussing about work plan constructionThe main key change is that they will replace the duties of the CDM Co-ordinator role removing their role completely and allocating their duties to the sole Designer or Principal Designer. This means that either of these two new roles have to identify, eliminate or control all foreseeable risks as well as ensure that relevant information is passed to other duty holders. They will also be responsible for ensuring that the Health and Safety File is prepared and passed to the client upon completion of the project.

Another key change is that these duties will also be placed upon domestic clients meaning that when you work on a project for domestic clients, the Designers Principal Designers, Principal Contractors and Contractors will all have the same roles as they would if they were working on a commercial site however the domestic client would usually have no responsibilities and therefore pass any duties to the Contractor, Principal Contractor or Principal Designer.

Design teams will also need to be more risk aware when planning projects, including possible risks from the proposed construction as well as the existing building or site conditions. These possible risks will need to be passed to the construction teams.

The new regulations also include a requirement for a CPP (construction phase plan) to be created for all construction projects.
